Around 760 participants attended the 12. EANO Conference in Mannheim. For the first time, we had a truly international educational day attached to the scientific program of EANO and also a very attractive nurse´s educational day and a scientific program for nurses.

At the conference venue Rosengarten in Mannheim, the team from Heidelberg, supported by the EANO Board and the NOA Board organized a 4-day-meeting. The meeting was initiated by a brilliant speech of the former Nobel Prize laureate Harald zur Hausen, who shared his view on the viral origin of some solid cancers. Already at that evening, more than 300 people not only carefully listened to the update in viral oncology, but also enjoyed lively discussions afterwards.

For the first time, there was an interaction of EANO and EORTC Brain Tumor Group on the organization of the educational day. Different from the years before, this educational day was in English and intended to attract young EANO members and none-members, as well as scientist to get an update on basic, translational and clinical data on meningioma and glioma. An international panel of experts presented updates and latest news in these areas. The day was rounded by three presentations on the generation and practical use of high-throughput data.

Parallel to the educational day for doctors and scientist, Ingela Oberg organized a scientifically and also practice oriented nursing educational day. Here, the true interdisciplinarity of EANO resulted in both excellent and extremely relevant presentations and discussions with the focus on the nurse´s perspective.

Carina Thomé and Anna Berghoff from the Clinical Cooperation Unit Neurooncology at the DKFZ spearheaded the first Young EANO scientist get together; an initiative, well suited to attract more scientists and especially younger people to EANO.

Highlights of the EANO educational program have been the first presentation of the TAVAREC- and EORTC 26101-phase II-data in an oral format. Likewise, the phase III-data of EORTC 26101 and CATNON were appreciated by the specialist audience. Additional highlights were invited lectures from ASNO, SNO and EANO. Those lectures are considered award from the respective societies and the speakers Koichi Ichimura, Mario Suva and Martin van den Bent gave visionary lectures in their field.

The EANO awards were given to Sina Burth from Heidelberg and Vincent Ho from Utrecht for their posters. Babar Vaqas from London received the VMA award for the best presentation.

The elections gave rise to a new board and Wolfgang Wick from Heidelberg, the congress president as new EANO president for the upcoming two years. The next EANO-related events are the WFNOS 2017 Meeting in Zürich May 4 to 7 and the EANO 2018 in Stockholm. EANO will from now on present itself on an annual occasion instead of the biannual meetings in the past.
